Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOs) such as World of warcraft are apparently able to last forever. Updates and expansions are released regularly, but players would likely keep pace even if they weren’t. As the video game industry continues to develop more and more live service titles across different platforms, not all companies are so lucky. Mobile games in particular have a history of shutting down, making their content inaccessible. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is one of the next titles that will suffer this fate.
Niantic, developer of popular augmented reality (AR) mobiles, announced Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is closing its doors for good in the near future. In today’s blog post detailing the shutdown, Niantic confirms that it will no longer be available to download or support microtransactions on December 6, 2021, and will then become fully unplayable on January 31, 2022. Although it will there will be gameplay changes that will Wizards unite more accessible until the end of his life, many fans are no doubt disappointed to see that happen just two years later. This rapid lifecycle can also be a warning for those trying out Niantic’s latest title, Pikmin Bloom.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite feels like a match made in heaven
Harry potter, the British book series that has become a global multimedia empire, is one of the largest franchises ever. In 2016, CNBC reported Harry potter was worth around $ 25 billion largely thanks to sales of books and toys. Another breakdown by Title Max in 2019 found it to be worth $ 30 billion, ranking as the 10th highest-grossing media franchise of all time.
The first on this 2019 list was Pokemon, and an important factor in its continued rise in recent years is the success of Pokémon GO; another AR mobile game developed by Niantic. When it was launched in 2016, Pokémon GO has proven the viability of taking the real world gameplay developed for its previous business Entrance and slap on popular skin with unique mechanisms worthy of this property. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was the experience to follow Pokémon GO, and although it has also found a fan base willing to roam the wizarding world, this game has never reached the same heights as its older brother.
Niantic does not specify why Wizards unite and its associated community forums and social media channels close just two years after launch, its blog post simply thanks the “millions of wizards and wizards around the world. [who] have embarked on real-world adventures. ”However, it’s safe to assume that overall downloads and cash flow never caught up with Pokémon GO, which recorded its highest player spend since launching during Pokémon GO Fest 2020, Niantic therefore allocates its server space and its development power to Pikmin Bloom – which came out last month.
Pikmin Bloom may not follow
Although it is one of Nintendo’s main franchises with representation in crossover games like Super Smash Bros. and real-world attractions like Super Nintendo World, Pikmin has never been a powerhouse. Mario and Link are familiar names on par with Pokemon‘s Pikachu, but the tiny plant-like Pikmin would be harder for ordinary people to pull off. Pikmin 3 Deluxe on Switch is its most successful title yet, but it’s nowhere near cracking Nintendo’s top-selling list as of June 30, 2021.
Pokemonname recognition was a boon when launching Pokémon GO, who capitalized on the property using a rock solid premise: letting players catch Pokemon in real life. One could argue that Wizards unite was just as smart to design a premise that matches the source material, like Harry potter presents an entire universe hidden just out of sight for non-magical peoples; something that mobile gaming players were able to access as well. Even so, despite Harry potter being frequently in the news thanks to new films and controversies surrounding creator JK Rowling, Wizards unite didn’t last long in the grand scheme of things.
Some may feel Pikmin Bloom having the support of Nintendo guarantees that it will have a longer lifespan similar to Pokémon GO, but even that is not a guarantee. Nintendo and various developers under its wing have released a few mobile games. While the intelligent system Fire Emblem Heroes continues to thrive years after its launch, Dr Mario World just closed after opening in 2019. Fans of Pikmin Bloom will have to make the most of it, because it is not known when this will go in the direction of Wizards unite, Dr Mario World, or other deceased mobile titles like Minecraft Land.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is now available for iOS and Android devices, but will stop on January 31, 2021.
