Wizarding Weekend is for you – Chicago Tribune

More than 40 companies are part of a Chicago event centered on magic.

Beverly/Morgan Park Wizarding Weekend will be headquartered July 23-24 at Morgan Park Academy.

“A lot is going to happen. We’re going to take fun things and bring them to life in a different way. It will be all over town,” said Beverly/Morgan Park Wizarding Weekend Organizing Committee Member Mary Jo Viero.

“I am so excited to collaborate with the whole community. It’s the coolest thing about the event.

Beverly/Morgan Park Wizarding Weekend offers activities for “Harry Potter” fans as well as families looking for entertainment.

“When my son was younger, he read the books. We watched all the movies. I threw a Harry Potter party for him when he was little,” Viero said of his son Frank Viero who is starting college this year.

“It’s something I’ve always appreciated. I went to a Harry Potter festival with my son a long time ago and always thought it was something we could do in our neighborhood. I felt like we had so much built in that relates to this world that it would be an easy transformation.

Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. on July 23 at the Morgan Park Academy Alumni Hall, where attendees can purchase admission passes showing the Beverly/Morgan Park Wizarding Weekend venues. Quidditch matches with the Loyola University Chicago team are also played outdoors.

“It’s the perfect setting. There is a nice field. It’s one of our best schools in the neighborhood. We’re really excited to show it off,” said Viero of The Beverly Community of Chicago.

“I believe the building was built in the late 1800s and was a military academy, so it has that very old feel. The interior is absolutely stunning.

The weekend includes hands-on Magical Creature Care with approximately 10 reptiles, insects and amphibians from Mokena-based Crosstown Exotics at 2 p.m. July 23, a scavenger hunt, costumed characters and traveling magicians.

“There will be great places to walk around and you will see different things. Some things will be perfect for children. Other things will be perfect for adults. There’s something for everyone on the map,” said Viero, who is also executive director of the Beverly Area Planning Association.

“Everyone is involved. That’s what’s nice. »

The festival also offers potion-making, herbalism, and divination classes at Givins Beverly Castle, 10244 S. Longwood Drive; sweets from Sweet Freaks Chocolates, 9927 S. Wood St.; and Celtic music and adult drinks on the evening of July 23 at Barney Callaghan’s Pub, 10618 S. Western Ave.

“We want to invest the profits in neighborhood beautification efforts,” Viero said.

“We have a historic district. Our homes are absolutely beautiful. Every type of architectural style is here. Beverly also has iconic buildings. We are higher up so there are hills. It is a beautiful historic district.

Beverly/Morgan Park Wizarding Weekend co-sponsors include Beverly Area Planning Association, 19th Ward Office, Beverly Arts Center, Morgan Park Academy, Beverly Bank & Trust, Morgan Park Beverly Hills Business Association and 95th Street Business Association.

“There are over 40 companies that are going to have a Harry Potter-themed item,” Viero said.

“We’ve really tried to incorporate a lot of our wonderful businesses and restaurants. The fun is seeing everyone get involved.
