Where and how to watch them

If you aren’t already obsessed with Harry Potter, you might not know where to start. Everyone you know is already obsessed, so how do you dive into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? If you’re just getting started, here’s how to watch the Harry Potter movies in order.

How to watch the Harry Potter movies in order

Enter the world of Harry Potter

Call me a purist, but before you watch the Harry Potter movies, you should definitely read the books first.

No matter how you choose to watch the Harry Potter movies in sequence, you have to enjoy JK Rowling’s original text that brought the characters to life. You can’t fit that much plot and character development into a two-and-a-half-hour movie as opposed to a book that’s several hundred pages long.

Literature and cinema are two very different mediums which give their creators the power to accomplish different things. Even if the films were word-for-word reproductions of the book, they would still bring something new to the table, as it is both a visual and aural aid.

The movies give us an immersive view of the world of Harry Potter, but first we have to build this world from scratch in our imaginations. Then we can fill in the missing subtext which allows us to enjoy the movies even more.

You can purchase hard copies of the Harry Potter book series virtually anywhere books are sold, or if you are an auditory learner, you can enjoy Jim Dale’s original recordings on Audible. Its version is widely regarded as the best audiobook adaptation.

Where it all began: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Chronologically speaking, fantastic beasts and where to find them takes place years before Harry Potter received his letter from Hogwarts. However, if you don’t understand the basics of the Wizarding World and start early in the franchise, you’ll probably get a little lost in Newt Scamander’s frolics around 1926 in New York City.

You will discover the world with Harry; growing up with his Muggle aunt and uncle (non-magical), he doesn’t know anything about wands and witchcraft. You are introduced into the wizarding world at the same rate as the Boy Who Lived.

This movie has charm because it’s the first time we see what Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Witchcraft looks like, hear the air rustling in your ears when you step on a broom and can almost taste the taste. beans with every flavor from Bertie Bott. .

Not that you necessarily want to experience the taste of earwax.

A breathtaking sequel: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

The Chamber of Secrets continues the successful tone of the the sorcerer’s stone. As a result, we learn more about the Wizarding World and find out more about The Dark Lord.

Harry foiled it once, but will he succeed again?

With six more films, the answer? Probably.

Sadly, this is the last movie starring Richard Harris, the original Albus Dumbledore. He tragically died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma before they started filming number three. He perfectly encompassed the gentle, thoughtful, pensive Dumbledore we see in the early books. As the series darkens, Dumbledore becomes a more complicated character. We’ll never see how he would have approached the increased complexity of the role.

We’re taking a darker turn: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

With a new film comes a new director. With a new director comes a darker take on the series.

While movies one and two have charming, childlike exploration fun, you begin to discover in movie three that there is darkness in this world of magic. Alfonso Cuaron is directing the film and it has a decidedly different feel to other films.

This is the reason why some consider this to be their favorite. Others prefer different films with a different view of the director.

A dark wizard – one of Voldemort’s right arms – escapes from Azkaban. Azkaban is a terrifying place, guarded by dementors: creatures that suck your soul and make you relive your darkest memories.

Azkaban is the wizarding equivalent of Alcatraz, which is why it is so terrifying when this man escapes from prison.

His stated motivation to escape? Find and end the Boy Who Lived.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

The Wizarding World is Growing: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

With movie number four we find out that Hogwarts isn’t the only wizarding school. Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, two rival schools, attend Hogwarts for the year so they can participate in the Triwizard Tournament.

We are witnessing a Quidditch World Cup, which becomes the site of a congregation of dark wizards. As the trio try to make it through the tournament and pass their lessons, they must fight an unspeakable evil by the end of the film.

Return of the Dark Lord: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

While the threat of Voldemort has loomed over the series so far, The Unnamed One reaches his full potential at the end of the fourth book. And the government refuses to believe it.

The Ministry of Magic – the wizarding government – is also beginning to play a larger role. And they don’t like Harry scaring the wizarding community by saying that Voldemort is back.

The Final Year at Hogwarts: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Witchcraft school traditionally ends in seven years, but this is the last year that Harry, Ron and Hermione will attend Hogwarts as students.

Harry begins to learn from Dumbledore the quest he must complete to defeat Voldemort.

He delves into the past with Dumbledore to learn more about Voldemort’s origins as Tom Riddle. Will this unlock the key to his defeat?

Horcrux Hunt: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1

The way to defeat Voldemort is by destroying its horcruxes. In his attempt to gain eternal life, he splits his soul into pieces and keeps them safe in various virtually impenetrable artifacts.

So how are Harry, Ron, and Hermione going to find seemingly random items, destroy them, while the government and the Death Eaters (who have basically become the same thing) hunt them down?

The Battle of Hogwarts: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2

All the trials Harry and his friends have had to overcome over the past six years will be open to closing in this last film.

In conclusion, we get answers to all the unanswered questions that we have collected during the series. Not only do we have a satisfactory conclusion. But we also get an adorable epilogue of what’s going on. Nineteen years later.

Beyond the original books

If the original series isn’t enough for you, there’s more to explore!

One of the wizarding manuals, fantastic beasts and where to find them turns into its own prequel film series. It started with Fantastic beasts, has a sequence called The Crimes of Grindelwald, and the third film Dumbledore’s secrets will be released in 2022.

If you want to know what happens after the epilogue in the last book, check out The cursed child. It’s a Broadway play which explores the world of Harry Potter in another medium: the stage.
