Fans of the Fantastic beasts Film series rejoiced on Wednesday when the title of the third film was finally revealed. Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore arrives in theaters on April 15, 2022, in just six months. The plot was also teased by Wizarding World Digital; in this film, Albus Dumbledore calls on Newt Scamander and his friends to continue the fight against Gellert Grindelwald.
The plot description for Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore specifically mentions Albus, but he’s not the only character with that last name. What about the others in Dumbledore’s family tree? Who exactly is the “Dumbledore“Exclaims the title of this film, and what can we expect as revelations from these”secrets“?
Jude Law’s Albus would be the most obvious answer. We know of both Fantastic beasts and Harry potter that Albus keeps a lot of important information to himself. He inspires his followers to trust him completely, even on such questionable subjects as Severus Snape’s allegiance. Poor Harry was tormented by the revelations after the death of his manager, wondering if he really knew the older man. Thus, it is certainly plausible that the “Dumbledore’s secretsâBelong to Albus.
If Albus is the Dumbledore here, so what could be his secrets? We know her friendship (and more specifically, her romance) with Grindelwald is being kept quiet for the wizarding world at large until Rita Skeeter publishes The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore after his death in 1997. Plus, we still have more questions than answers about the blood pact introduced in the last film. This seems to prevent Albus from facing Grindelwald head-on, but thanks to Albus’ future Chocolate Frog card, we know that the magic imbued in this item is not as compelling as the Unbreakable Oath. Something has to give, and we might just see the broken blood pact in the next movie.
Besides his relationship with Grindelwald, there are other things hidden about Albus that we may learn more about on April 15th. For one thing, we still don’t know the answer to the question Grindelwald, posing as Percival Graves, asked Newt in the first movie: “What makes Albus Dumbledore love you so much? (WtFT 157). Maybe we’ll come to understand Newt’s role in this story eventually. After all, he seemed at first to be just an eccentric magizoologist in the right place at the right time, but the extended scene of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald suggests that a classic Albus Dumbledore manipulation is underway.
There is also Albus’ complicated relationship with his family. We know a little about his estrangement from his brother Aberforth from the Harry potter books. We also know that Percival and Kendra hid the truth about their daughter Ariana even during imprisonment and death. Putting two and two together leads to the assumption that Ariana must have been an Obscurial. Will this theory be confirmed in the next film? Are we going to come back to the brothers’ duel at his funeral? If the “secretsâConcerns Ariana, will there be more to the story that her tragically succumbs to her Obscurus? It would be interesting to see another element introduced to make an impact on the story. Talking about thatâ¦
Aberforth and Ariana might not be the only siblings Albus has ever had. The bomb dropped at the end of the second movie is perhaps the most intriguing and mysterious of all: according to Grindelwald, Credence Barebone’s real name is Aurelius Dumbledore. Does Albus know about this second brother? What else does he know? What else could he have done in his quest for the Deathly Hallows or the “greater good,To the point of being involved in the death of a sister and the abandonment of a brother?
We can only speculate how much the next film will focus on Newt and his friends Jacob Kowalski and Tina and Queenie Goldstein. The cast are all confirmed, as is Ezra Miller (Credence, aka Aurelius). It seems likely that Dumbledore’s secrets will favor Credence with plenty of screen time, including more of his avalanche-causing power.
Credence could even be the Dumbledore whose movie is named after. After all, every Dumbledore we hear about keeps secrets; why should Credence be any different? Credence could eventually work secretly against Grindelwald. It remains to be seen what could turn him against the dark wizard who so tenderly framed him. It might have something to do with Credence’s deep bond with Nagini, who appears to have joined Albus’ team. We can also learn how a baby Dumbledore found his way on this sinking ship, entangled in Lestrange’s story.
Credence’s presumed identity opens the door to a hallway filled with more locked doors. This revelation, if true, is not in Rita Skeeter’s book, so even those closest to the Dumbledores did not have this knowledge. We will have to wait until April 15 to see how many Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore unravel the tangled web of lies and secrets that is the Dumbledore family.
