‘The Sandman’ JK Rowling Reference Has Really Divided Fans

If you haven’t watched the show yet, check out the trailer for The sand man below.

Spoiler alert. The rest of this article covers the plot of last week’s bonus episode. ‘Calliope’ starred Arthur Darvill as fictional writer Richard Madoc. In one scene, Madoc attends his book launch with his agent Larry (Kevin Harvey) saying “every major studio wants a piece”, of the project adding that Madoc will work with “anyone who lets him write and direct” the film adaptation of his novel. A character then responds, “They won’t even let Jo Rowling write and direct,” before Larry adds, “Jo Rowling needs a new agent. Tell him to call me.”

Needless to say, JK Rowling has been embroiled in controversy for the past few months after the author made a transphobic comment. After an article referring to “people who menstruate”, Rowling tweeted“‘People who menstruate’. I’m sure there was a word for these people. Someone help me. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” was quickly revealed.

Since The sand manJK’s bonus episode aired, fans debated whether the JK Rowling reference was a dig or a compliment. Some felt the joke cast a shadow over Rowling’s career lately, but others felt it highlighted her continued success despite her recent unresolved controversies. Either way, fans think the subject would have been best avoided.
