Quidditch, a real sport inspired by the “Harry Potter” films, changes its name following concerns with JK Rowling

Quidditch is more widely known as the sport played by the fictional character Harry Potter, but the sport has evolved into the real world and now its official league has announced a huge change from its creator.

The US Quidditch (USQ) and Major League Quidditch (MLQ) organizations announced this week that they began the process of selecting a new name after conducting a series of surveys over the past few months to inform their decision.

Real Quidditch was adapted from the 2005 “Harry Potter” book series at Middlebury College in Vermont by Xander Manshel and Alex Benepe. The sport has encountered limitations as the name is a registered trademark of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

The name change is also fueled by the league’s attempt to distance itself from the work of JK Rowling, the creator of the Harry Potter book series. She has previously be criticized for being anti-trans which has led some to qualify her as “TERF”, or radical transgender exclusionary feminist.

The USQ says its sport has earned a reputation as “one of the most progressive sports in the world when it comes to gender equality and inclusiveness.”

Controversies with Rowling in addition to branding issues kept the Quidditch league from developing, which MSQ described as including, but not limited to, sponsorship and broadcast opportunities.

The USQ and MLQ are hopeful that a new name change will allow the development of the sport’s players, fans and volunteers.

“I am delighted that the USQ and the MLQ are moving in this direction. Big changes like this are not without risk, but I have been a strong supporter of this decision for a long time. Sport needs its own space with no limits on its growth potential and changing its name is crucial to achieve this, ”said Benepe.

According to the USQ, an average of 3,500 athletes and 150 teams in each session nationwide participate in Quidditch and it is played in over 39 countries. It is a fast paced contact sport where each player must keep a broom between their legs at all times. Points are scored by throwing a volleyball (called a “quaffle”) through one of the three hoops attached to each end of the court, while chaser balls (called “bludgers”) are used to temporarily “knock out” the players. players.

The “Golden Snitch,” known as the little golden sphere with wings in the “Harry Potter” series, must be caught to end the game.

The USQ said it plans to complete the investigation process with sports stakeholders regarding the name change by the end of January.
