Netflix wants its own versions of Star Wars and Harry Potter

Netflix has outlined its plans to create franchises in the mold of pop culture phenomena Star Wars and Harry Potter.

In a report of Reuters (opens in a new tab), which suggests the streamer is aiming to build franchises that “cross film, TV, gaming and consumer products,” Netflix VP Matthew Thunell said, “We want to have our version of Star Wars or our version of Harry Potter, and we’re working really hard to build that.” Thunell, however, urged caution: “But these are not built overnight.”

Netflix doesn’t plan to replicate a galaxy far, far away and the Wizarding World exactly in genre terms, though its cross-media approach – Netflix has now hired in-house book scouts to take on adaptations and has also made a video game division – aims to be equally wide

But not everything will be ripe for a franchise. “It has to start with the story itself. Does that support that kind of expansion?” Thunell said. “There are shows like Stranger Things that are wildly successful, that have the depth of mythology and extra stories that allow you to jump into animation, feature films, or anime.”

Stranger Things therefore seems to be the A part of Netflix’s new conquering approach. Season 5 of Stranger Things will be the series’ last, but the story doesn’t end there.

Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers recently told the Podcast Happy Sad Confused (opens in a new tab) that they have plans for a potential spin-off that will be “1000% different” from the series.

Of the spinoff, Ross Duffer told SFX Magazine, “The key for us is that it has to feel like its own separate thing, not that we just retread what we’ve already done because what would be the point of I think we have something that could be quite exciting. So we’ll see…”

Next up for Netflix is The Gray Man actor – starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans and Ana de Armas – which is available on Netflix from July 22. For more on the streamer, be sure to check out some of the best Netflix movies you can stream right now.
