JK Rowling Reveals Why She Skipped The Harry Potter Reunion Special – Deadline

JK Rowling finally breaks her silence on why she didn’t appear on the HBO Max special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. The author of the books that spawned the hit movies revealed that her absence from the reunion was simply because it wasn’t something she wanted to do.

“I was asked to be on it and decided I didn’t want to do it,” she told host Graham Norton during an appearance on her Virgin Radio UK show and specifying that she was not excluded from the meeting. “I thought it was more about the movies than the book, rightly so, that was what the anniversary was about.”

She then added: “Nobody said not to [do it]… I was asked to do it and I decided not to.

The HBO Max special premiered on January 1 and featured all the key players who made the Harry Potter films a success.

Rowling has received a lot of backlash over her views on transgender women. Several of Harry Potter stars like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson opposed Rowling’s views and made public statements against them. Radcliffe wrote an essay condemning Rowling’s views that “transgender women are women.” Watson took to social media to express that “trans people are who they say they are” and took issue with Rowling’s stance.

The British author hasn’t backed down from her opinions and even doubled down on her decision by writing an essay about her stance but denying that she’s transphobic.
