Is Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts 3?

No, Johnny Depp is not returning to reprise the role of Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets, and Mads Mikkelsen is cast for the role.

Deadline points out that the 58-year-old star of Pirates of the Caribbean and Beyond was asked by Warner Bros. to withdraw from the third installment of Fantastic Beasts after losing a libel case.

Johnny got into a legal battle with a British tabloid after they described him in a derogatory manner in relation to his marriage to Amber Heard. However, the judge favored the tabloid side, and Johnny was asked to step down from the project after filming on set for just one day.

Even if he received his full salary although he was not in the movie, he initially had a five-movie deal with Warner Bros which he would ultimately lose as a result of this decision.

The Danish actor is officially locked up to take over, with the film scheduled for release on Friday, April 15, 2022.

“It would be creative suicide”

Mads has already impressed in Nicolas Winding Refn Pusher movie theater, Another round, Casino Royale, the Annibal series and many other efforts.

He’s an incredibly accomplished actor, but as he approaches him in an interview with Collider, approaching a role that has already been played by another comes with certain challenges:

“No one is interested in me going out there and trying to copy anything, it would be creative suicide immediately, especially when it’s been done before and masterfully.” So everyone expects us to find a different path.

He continued, “Having said that, we need a bridge between what he’s done and what I’m going to do, so these bridges that you have to find together, whether it’s a certain look, whether it’s a certain attitude in some situations, but you have to make it your own Everything else would just be creatively stupid.

Fans shouldn’t expect Mads’ portrayal of Grindelwald to be exactly the same as Johnny’s under these circumstances. It will certainly be exciting to see what unique qualities he brings to the Dark Wizard.

Johnny Depp intervenes

Variety reported fan reaction to Johnny’s casting in the franchise in 2018 and JK Rowling supported the decision to cast him as the main character in the movies.

This led the author to receive heat online and Johnny himself weighed about the situation, saying he “felt bad” for JK to have to take this.

Address the reasons for the backlash, Johnny explained: “The fact remains that I was falsely accused, which is why I am suing the Sun newspaper for defamation for repeating false accusations.”

He adds that JK supported him because she had “seen the evidence”.

Although he was held on for The Crimes of Grindelwald, we now know that he was ultimately released once the aforementioned case was not in his favor.
