But audiences are probably more familiar with Dumbledore’s characterization in the Harry Potter films where he is depicted at a much older age.

In the first two Potter movies, Dumbledore was played by respected actor Richard Harris. After Harris’ death, Michael Gambon took over and was able to portray Dumbledore’s most action-packed and emotional moments from JK Rowling‘s book series. Dumbledore is recognized in the Harry Potter books and movies like a brilliant wizard. He is a mentor to Harry, teaching him powerful aspects of magic that very few wizards understand. He has an important duel against Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) in which he emerges as champion.

Albus Dumbledore’s Powers in Harry Potter Explained

While the young Dumbledore seen in the fantastic beasts movies is already very powerful, the Dumbledore seen in Harry Potter has its own merits. According to Rowling’s books, he turned down the post of Minister for Magic to stay at Hogwarts, but has many other honorable titles, including Supreme Mugwump. Dumbledore’s prowess as a wizard is more often heard than seen in the Harry Potter movies; he has many admirers who respect him and a few enemies who dare not fight him (before Voldemort’s return).

Similar to fantastic beastsDumbledore in the Harry Potter films is not often seen in a duel but fights a tough opponent at the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. He confronts Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), who is considered the most powerful dark wizard since Grindelwald, if not the most powerful. Seemingly unfazed by his age, Albus displays the ability to go both on offense and defense against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. He also has the Elder Wand at this point and his already well-practiced magical abilities are a great match for the instrument.

Is Dumbledore of Fantastic Beasts stronger than that of Harry Potter?

Have at least some exposure to young Dumbledore’s magical abilities fantastic beasts and the eldest of Harry Potter, we can decide that one is stronger than the other. However, the Elder Dumbledore has gained this advantage and is able to take on Voldemort, who is even more powerful than Grindelwald.

Is Albus Dumbledore the most powerful wizard of all time?

The next logical question to ask is whether there are or have been wizards more powerful than Albus Dumbledore. His skill with a wand has already been discussed, allowing him to defeat the two most powerful dark wizards of all time. Since he defeated Grindelwald and Voldemort, they cannot be considered more powerful than Dumbledore. Dumbledore’s death at the hands of Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) might spark some dissent over his power, but Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows revealed that this way of dying was orchestrated entirely on Dumbledore’s orders.

If there were any other rivals to Dumbledore’s power both on the fantastic beasts and Harry Potter franchises, they could be found among the founders of Hogwarts whose houses were named. These four witches and wizards knew enough to be able to teach their youth and organize a school that lasted for centuries. A few of them were also able to create powerful magic items; Harry PotterRowena Ravenclaw had her diadem which granted wisdom to its wearers, and Godric Gryffindor had his sword which only appears to the worthy, and he also enchanted the Sorting Hat. Salazar Slytherin managed to build a large hidden chamber under the school without the knowledge of his colleagues which was only accessible to those who spoke Parseltongue.

Each of these accomplishments by the Founders would have required significant magical ability. However, there is far less evidence of the power of the Founders compared to that shown by Albus Dumbledore. Hogwarts’ most famous headmaster is also known for his restraint in the use and acceptance of power, as evidenced Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets when Dumbledore refuses the Qilin bow. All the evidence seen in fantastic beasts and Harry Potter portraying Albus Dumbledore as the most powerful wizard of all time but also as a wizard who only wields the full extent of his power when he needs it most.
