The Harry Potter films pair Luna Lovegood with Neville Longbottom, but the books have an entirely different take.
Luna Lovegood is one of those characters from the Harry potter films that are almost impossible not to love. She is eccentric, helpful and above all kind. From the way she supports Harry Potter, both as a friend and as an ally, to the way she treats her friends, Luna is a really good person in a world where corruption seems to permeate even the walls. from Hogwarts. As such, it is not surprising that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 suggests she reunites with Neville Longbottom, another heartwarming character.
But that only happens in the film adaptation of the series. While Neville and Luna seem perfect for each other in several ways, this isn’t the ending JK Rowling wanted. In fact, Luna ends up with a character that a lot of people haven’t even heard of – Rolf Scamander.
Rolf Scamander is the grandson of Newt Scamander, made famous by the Fantastic beasts and where to find them movie theater. Like his grandfather before him, Rolf went on to become a magizoologist, eventually even becoming the chief consulting magizoologist of the Daily Prophet. He ends up marrying Luna Lovegood and they have twins together – Lorcan and Lysander.
So, if Luna ends up marrying the grandson of a famous magizoologist, why isn’t that mentioned in the final film? Maybe it’s because Rolf isn’t even introduced in the Harry potter books, not to mention movies. He is only mentioned briefly about Luna and not much is said about him other than his famous lineage. After spending so much time with Neville in the movies, it’s easy to see him with Luna, the two of them both slightly outcast and a little weird, getting together again. He ends their two stories in a very satisfying way.
But Luna is also highly compatible with Rolf. They both have a fascination with strange and misunderstood creatures and seem to come from families who have a flair for the extraordinary. Not only do they likely feel a soul mate in the creatures they surround themselves with, but also with each other, which makes perfect sense.
the Harry potter the movies also don’t feature who Neville ends up with in the books – Hannah Abbott, a Hufflepuff the same year as Harry and everyone else. In the books, she is a member of Dumbledore’s army and even fights in the Battle of Hogwarts. She and Neville end up getting married and living above the Leaky Cauldron, of which Hannah becomes the landlady. Yet Hannah is Also left out in the movies. Although she is more present in the books, she is still not a major character.
Maybe that’s because Neville and Luna’s real-life spouses don’t get much attention in the Harry potter movies, or maybe it’s because Neville and Luna together make sense, but the movies stray from the source material in that regard. While Neville and Luna end up together, it’s the best fan service, there’s a definitive version of the story that doesn’t quite work that way.
