According to Attractions Magazine, the giant wands are returning to Leicester Square in London to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of the first film in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The film premiered in Leicester Square on November 16, 2001.
The nine 15-foot-high wands that line the 60-foot alley which is the entrance to the gardens are replicas of the wands designed for figures such as Harry, Voldemort and, in honor of the Fantastic beasts films, Newt Scamander. Also included is the Elder Wand, earned and worn by various characters including Dumbledore.
The wands will be lit from today, October 13, until October 25, every evening from 6 p.m. to 8:35 p.m. (Why 8: 35? It sounds strange.) The accompanying light shows are set to music from the Potter and Fantastic beasts movies.
After completing their run in Leicester Square, the giant wands will embark next March on a tour of the UK, the destination having been determined by an earlier vote. The wand tour towns include Birmingham, Hull, Reading and Stoke-on-Trent. These wand installations will lead to the release of Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore on April 22, 2022. Leaky had previously published an article on these big baguettes when they were exhibited in London in 2018 to mark the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Harry is already pictured in the plaza as a bronze statue in the installation “Scenes in the Square”, alongside other beloved movie icons such as Mary Poppins, Wonder Woman and Batman.
Other events in Leicester Square during the month of October include the free ‘Inside Out Festival’, which offers artistic and cultural entertainment outdoors for safer enjoyment while the pandemic is still ongoing.
Other celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the first Harry Potter film include special screenings in cinemas across the UK and Ireland from October 29, as well as a UK tour of the Platform luggage cart replica 9 ¾, which will make appearances at stations like Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff and Edinburgh. No word on whether the cart will sign autographs for its fans.
The dates of the luggage cart tour are as follows:
- Edinburgh Waverley: 16-18 Oct.
- New Birmingham Street: 23-25 Oct.
- Cardiff Center: 26-28 Oct.
- Belfast Lanyon Place: 29-31 Oct.
Have you seen the chopsticks? Which characters are represented by the rest of the sticks in the installation?
