Five Nights At Freddy’s movie loses director Chris Columbus

Producer Jason Blum has confirmed that the movie Five Nights at Freddy has lost director Chris Columbus and still hasn’t found the perfect screenplay.

Director Chris Columbus has left Blumhouse’s film adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s. The director is best known for his big-price family films like Alone at home and its sequel, Mrs. Doubtfire, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, and the first two Harry potter movies. When Columbus was attached to Five nights at Freddy’s in 2018, this film would have been his first simple horror film, allowing him to tap into the impulses he had when he wrote the screenplay for Gremlins in the early 1980s.

Five nights at Freddy’s is a long-term project that has encountered obstacles from the start. The film is an adaptation of the 2014 video game of the same name, in which the player is a security guard at a Chuck E. Cheese-type establishment filled with spooky haunted animatronics. Horror production company Blumhouse got attached to the project in 2017, but they struggled to find a script that appealed to creator Scott Cawthon, who rejected 9 different drafts. In the meantime, there have been 8 games released with a ninth on the way, 3 spinoff games, 3 novels and 12 anthology books written, and a Nicolas Cage movie with the exact same principle called Willy’s Wonderland.

Talk with Collider, producer Jason Blum announced that although Five nights at Freddy’s was due to start filming in the spring of this year, Chris Columbus pulled out of the project. He didn’t explain why the director split from Freddy’s, but he reiterated his constant refrain that the script is “really hard to break.” His “took longer than [he] I was hoping to have the right story“, but he confidently declares that they are”far from giving up.“Read the full quote here:

Chris Columbus is no longer tied. [Whether there’s a new director] is classified information. [The script is] really hard to break.

We’ve written several scripts, and we’ve got where we thread a needle, which does Five Nights at Freddy’s justice and makes Scott (Cawthon) happy. The only way to do it would be to give Scott … I don’t want to do something Scott doesn’t like. Let me say this in a different way. I’m not allowed to do anything Scott doesn’t like. Basically Scott is kind of like the equivalent of “final cut” and it took longer than I expected to get the story right.

We are far from giving up. And I am convinced that I will understand eventually.

Some of the scripts that were rejected by Cawthon have wild premises. As detailed in a Reddit post posted by the creator in November of last year, story ideas included “an underground factory that designed robots for the government, ” “a puppet outside for revenge“and one where the”Soft toys take Manhattan. “He eventually tried to write a screenplay himself, as he is most familiar with the lore, but didn’t think he was good at writing in the format. Although at the time he announced that they had come to an agreement on a script, clearly that is no longer the case.

Hopefully it won’t take long to tie up a new director given the company’s access to a huge stable of talented horror filmmakers. As for the scenario, Five nights at Freddy’s may have quite a bit of history at this point due to the many games that have since been released in the series, but it might be good for Blumhouse to go for simplicity. The game ultimately has a very clean premise to scare you and doesn’t need to over dress. Fans who have played through the entire franchise will appreciate a bunch of Easter Eggs and an expanded mythology, but that’s not essential to delivering the powerful shocks games are known for.
