While some kids might like their dad to be a member of the wizarding world, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star Eddie Redmayne says his kids aren’t fooled.
Eddie Redmayne admits his kids aren’t too impressed with his fantastic beasts role, despite his best efforts. Shortly after winning an Oscar for her role in the Stephen Hawking biopic The theory of everything, Redmayne achieved a new level of Hollywood fame by joining a major studio franchise. He was chosen to be the head of Warner Bros. Harry Potter prequel series, fantastic beasts and where to find them, playing magizoologist Newt Scamander. From the very first film, it was clear that Redmayne was an excellent choice to play the shy, yet generous and courageous Newt.
Currently, the fantastic beasts The franchise is preparing for the release of its third film. Dumbledore’s secrets hits theaters next week and advances the brewing Wizarding War at the center of the series. This time around, dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) plans to make a big power play in the wizarding world, so Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) assembles a team to stop him. Newt is at the forefront of this team, as are returning players Jacob Kowalski (Dan Folger) and Newt’s brother Theseus (Callum Turner), among others.
With Fantastic Beasts 3‘s outlet just around the corner, Redmayne is now making the rounds promoting the film. He recently stopped Live with Kelly and Ryan (via AND Canada), where he admitted that despite trying to get them to think otherwise, his kids aren’t thrilled about him playing a wizard. Redmayne’s 5-year-old daughter just wanted to turn her wand into something else, while her 4-year-old son wasn’t fooled by her attempts to look like a real wizard. Redmayne explained:
“There was a time this year when I felt like as a dad, who was playing a wizard, I could try to get some brownie points. I gave my daughter Iris the Newt’s wand. Which I found quite exciting, and she said, ‘Okay, thanks dad.’ I came back an hour later and she covered the thing in foil, she had made a little star and made a fairy wand. And she’s like, ‘Now it’s a wand.’ [That] Slightly undermined my brownie points.
“You have this kind of moral dilemma, like am I lying to my child? I get stuck in the middle and [my son’s] like, ‘No, either you’re a wizard or you’re not’, so I said ‘Yeah, I’m a wizard’ and I did kind of a coin trick, the only magic trick I could do. And he’s like, ‘That’s not the kind of thing you can do in the [Fantastic Beasts] trailer. In the trailer, you can blow things up. So I think he told his friends at school and they asked me to do certain things in the trailer and it was kind of disappointing.
Redmayne’s struggles to get his kids excited about who he plays on the big screen are reminiscent of the stories many MCU and DCEU actors have told about their own children. It seems kids would be especially thrilled to know that their parents are known to be heroes, but they actually seem to be the hardest to fool. Maybe when the Redmayne kids are older and can watch Harry Potterthey will realize that being a member of the wizarding world through fantastic beasts is quite fun.
Redmayne has truly proven himself to be the newt that fantastic beasts deserves it, even if the franchise itself strays from the original premise that showcased her character. The first movie really focused on Newt’s love of magical creatures and how great he is with them, but later episodes turned their gaze to fighting Grindelwald. Still, Newt remains a key part of the action in fantastic beastsand with two other films that should arrive after Dumbledore’s secretsRedmayne still has time to convince his children.
