Eddie Redmayne shares what he learned from his role in the wizarding world


Eddie Redmayne played Newt Scamander for three films in the fantastic beasts franchise. Like many actors, Redmayne has found ways to relate to his Wizarding World persona. The actor shares that he not only finds Newt’s attributes relatable, but portraying the character has also taught him life lessons that he continues to embrace.

‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ Continues Newt’s Story in the Wizarding World

the fantastic beasts the films are set in the wizarding world, approximately 65 years before the events of the Harry Potter movies. Redmayne plays Newt, a timid magizoologist with extensive knowledge of fantastical beasts. The series began with Newt searching for his magical creatures that ran amok. The following, The Crimes of Grindelwaldmade Grindelwald (Johnny Depp, now Mads Mikkelsen) the central antagonist.

Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets continues the story of the first two films. A young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) recruits a team to stop Grindelwald from taking over the wizarding world and declaring war on non-magical humans. Redmayne’s role as Newt has grown smaller than it was in the first film, but he continues to be a central part of this franchise.

Dumbledore’s secrets marks Redmayne’s third appearance as Newt. Meanwhile, the Oscar-winning actor has had time to reflect and learn from his fantastic beasts role. In an interview with Digital Spy, Redmayne spoke about the qualities of Newt that he tries to emulate in his own life.

“The first is that worrying means you suffer twice, which was in the first movie,” Redmayne explained. “I’m a big worry and I always tell myself that if the horrible thing is going to happen, there’s no point in worrying about it because it’s going to happen anyway and then you’re just going to have doubled your pain.”

The actor recalls a specific moment when Newt speaks to Dumbledore. Redmayne highlights a few words of wisdom Newt utters in this scene.

“There’s something he says to Dumbledore in this movie that I love is that I’m killing him here, but we all make mistakes in life, but you can try to make things better,” Redmayne continued. “It’s the try that counts. It is the aspiration to improve things that counts.

It’s only beneficial when an actor is able to see themselves in their characters. Redmayne says he not only loves Newt as a character, but there are many attributes that the actor exhibits as well.

“I love Newt, and there are a lot of things I like about him,” Redmayne told Digital Spy. “I love that he’s an incredibly empathetic person. He looks for the good in people. He’s also very happy in his own company, and in the company of creatures. He’s someone who loves silence. I am someone who, in my anxiety, tends to feel too many words.

Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets hits theaters April 15.
