Although actor Tom Felton does not play a likeable character, many Harry Potter fans appreciate Felton’s performance as the smug and vicious Draco Malfoy. Draco is just as bad in the books, but Felton himself wouldn’t have known that until he took on the role. It would be any child’s dream to be in the Harry Potter movies, but Felton says he had very little interest in novels before he was cast in film.
Actor Tom Felton played Draco Malfoy in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies
In the Harry Potter movies, Draco is presented as a rival to Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe). Draco comes from the wealthy Malfoy family and is placed in Slytherin house. Throughout the franchise, Draco bullies Harry and his friends, but often backs down from any challenge to his power.
Draco seems malicious, but his father Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs) is even worse. Lucius is a Death Eater and a loyal servant of Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). Eventually, Draco becomes friends with Harry, but the two are at odds for most of the series. Felton plays Draco very well, making the spoiled brat a character fans love to hate.
Tom Felton had no interest in books before being cast as Draco Malfoy
When the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was released in 1997, millions of children around the world fell in love with these characters and the world. Many children who liked novels wanted to join the movies.
Felton auditioned for the role of Draco, but had very little interest in the books. In an interview with The Guardian, Felton said his lack of interest may have helped land him the role.
“I was also one of the only ones who didn’t know what Harry Potter was at the time,” Felton said. “Anyone could try, so many excited kids loved the books…I think I got the part because I was nonchalant and had no idea what people were doing. Wizards in the cupboards under the stairs? And with three big brothers, you quickly learn to have confidence in yourself. I think Chris Columbus, the director, recognized this slight disinterest and arrogance towards me, which he thought could work for Malfoy.
That would make sense because that personality type is a perfect fit for Draco. Draco is a stand out character and Felton stood out among a sea of kids who loved it Harry Potter.
Felton didn’t have the same level of commitment as other ‘Harry Potter’ actors
Felton appeared in every movie, but he never got as much screen time as other actors like Radcliffe, Emma Watson, or Rupert Grint would have. Felton told the Guardian he was able to balance his school schedule with filming the Harry Potter movies. However, he was frustrated with how Draco’s reputation often followed him off-screen.
“My schedules were set so that I could stay in school with weeks and weeks off,” Felton explained. “Rupert [Grint]Emma [Watson] and Daniel [Radcliffe], meanwhile, have been there non-stop for 10 years. I carried on as usual. I occasionally got gags or comments from my friends, but honestly no one was bothered. Some people really struggle with the idea that I wasn’t that special, popular kid, but I was walking around with dyed hair and playing an evil wizard. It wasn’t cool. Did me a disservice with the girls.
the Harry Potter The collection is currently streaming on HBO Max.
