Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has said Order of the Phoenix is his favorite film in the series thanks to his role alongside Gary Oldman.
Daniel Radcliffe has finally confirmed which Harry potter film is his absolute favorite of the group, and although each Potter the film has its fair share of fans, the actor’s response is still an unlikely choice.
JK Rowling’s film adaptations Harry potter novels are some of the most beloved movies of all time, so it can be difficult to pick a favorite. The saga offers eight films to choose from (or ten, if you count the Fantastic beasts fallout from recent years) and countless Potter buffs around the world will say that each episode is a masterpiece in its own right. Radcliffe, the lead actor behind the taped glasses and lightning bolt scar, has revealed his own favorite Potter entered into an interview with Wired. Although he admitted it was not the most popular opinion, Radcliffe said that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was his favorite movie in the series, confessing, “I really like the fifth.”
Radcliffe said Phoenix rose to the top of the pack for him because it gave him the chance to act alongside one of his idols, the legendary Gary Oldman. Oldman first appeared as Sirius Black in the Third Wizarding World movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. While Sirius played a major role in the film as the titular Azkaban escapee, his screen time was scarce and most of his scenes did not include Radcliffe. When he reappeared in Phoenix, however, Sirius took on the role of mentor and father figure for Harry. Before Sirius tragically perished at the end of the film, Radcliffe and Oldman were able to share many emotional and engaging onscreen scenes together.
“I was sort of a little older at the time, so I was kind of able to appreciate that more,” Radcliffe said.
Radcliffe hasn’t shied away from singing the praises of Oldman in the past. While the cast of the Potter The saga was replete with seasoned actors such as Richard Harris, Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman, Oldman was the only celebrity who left Radcliffe feeling stunned on set. In fact, when Radcliffe was asked who he would play in a Harry potter reboot, he listed Sirius as one of his main contenders, largely due to taking on Oldman’s role.
Radcliffe admitted his response might have come as a surprise because Phoenix is “not the one that most people cite as one of their favorites.” Indeed, while all the main lines Harry potter films received mostly positive reviews, with the franchise‘s fifth entry receiving a lukewarm reception than the rest.
Phoenix is linked with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 as the lowest-rated film in the franchise, with both achieving “only” an overall critical score of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. The highest rated entry was Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which scored 96% from critics and is often considered an audience favorite. On this point, Radcliffe did not entirely disagree. While he definitely said Phoenix was his favorite Potter installment to be made, he said his favorite to watch was always “probably the last.”
All eight Harry potter the movies, including Radcliffe’s favorites, are now available to stream on HBO Max.
