  • Cash Converters’ ad suggesting Australians take out a loan to buy fries comes under fire
  • The company offers the PayAdvance feature which allows people to access the paycheck sooner
  • An advertising slogan urged Australians not to question ‘getting the sides’
  • Twitter users suggested the ads sent the wrong message about saving

Australians have been stunned by an ad that appears to be encouraging spenders to take out a loan so they can afford chips.

Cash Converters has announced its PayAdvance feature which allows Australians to access their paycheck sooner for a 5% fee.

Workers can access up to 25% of their salary through the loan and pay it back with their next check.

An advertisement, which has been criticized online, shows a young man shoving hot fries into his mouth.

Australians have been stunned by an ad that appears to encourage spendthrifts to take out a loan so they can afford a packet of fries

“Should I get the sides?” Shouldn’t be a question, reads the message on the ad.

“Access the pay you earned early for the things you earned today.”

One Twitter user summed up the announcement as “extremely dark”.

“Take out a payday loan to get fries,” they wrote, as many others agreed it sent the wrong message.

“It’s literally the exact opposite of what you’re supposed to do with your finances, you shouldn’t take out snack loans. Wait until you have the money, use your line of credit and pay it off immediately. If you can’t afford the sides you clearly have bigger problems,” said another.

“This is the kind of poster you see in a dystopian parody,” read a third tweet.

“He literally didn’t win the fries…that’s why he should take out a loan to pay for them,” another commented.

Cash Converters has been contacted for comment.
