BBC The Outlaws: The Life of Richard E Grant, From Missing Harry Potter Role To Daddy’s Tragic Battle With Alcohol

Richard E Grant stars as the Earl in the new BBC comedy thriller The Outlaws.

Starring the character of Gabby’s father, The Outlaws tells the story of seven strangers whose lives change when they find a bag of money while serving time back to the community in Bristol.

Richard, 64, is also known for his role as Jack Hock in the American biographical film, Can You Ever Forgive Me ?. He has starred in many other films including Spice World, The Iron Lady, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Mbabane-born actor Eswatini has certainly made a name for himself.

His real name, Richard Grant Esterhuysen, was born in 1957 to Leonne and Henrik Esterhuysen. His father worked in the British Protectorate of Swaziland as an education officer for the administration of the British government.

Richard attended a local public school in Mbabane, which racially integrated shortly before joining.

At the age of 10, he saw his mother having an affair with his father’s best friend. His parents divorced soon after, Richard’s father struggled with alcoholism.

Speaking about his father at the Evening Standard, he said: “There was a lot of pressure on me. I ended up becoming a parent to my parents, so I was forced to grow up early.”

Richard also explained how his father had previously tried to shoot him.

“The bullet whistled in front of my head. Luckily he passed out afterwards. He couldn’t remember it the next day,” he said.

In 1981, Richard’s father died of cancer.

After studying English and Drama at the University of Cape Town, Richard moved to Great Britain and assumed the stage name “Richard E. Grant” when he signed with the Equity union.

The actor’s first film role was in 1987’s “Withnail and I”. He went on to appear in films such as Henry & June, The Player and Penelope.

Richard was also considered to play the role of Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter. However, Jason Isaacs was chosen instead.

As the director, Richard wrote and directed Wah-Wah, the 2005 film that incorporates his childhood experiences.

In 1986, the Outlaws star married Joan Washington. Together they share a daughter, Oliva.

Diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, Joan sadly passed away on September 2, 2021.

Richard is also intolerant to alcohol and would be very ill 10 minutes after drinking it.
