Are you ready to return to Hogwarts ?!

A brand new event is coming soon to Harry Potter: Wizards Unite! Return to Hogwarts celebrates the entire journey of new Hogwarts students, from receiving your Hogwarts letter to arriving at Hogwarts Castle.

This Wizards Unite guide covers all of the event’s tasks and rewards, as well as some strategy tips.

Fair warning to all players: these tasks are considerably more difficult than what we usually see in Wizards Unite events. However, the rewards are also more enticing than usual. This is a rare opportunity to earn Restricted Section books outside of Shiny Events, let alone up to 180 Gold.

Not all players will be able to complete these tasks. If that’s your case, focus on boosted Foundables instead. Two Emergency Threat Foundables will be upgraded, which is an opportunity to grind up Sorcerer XP and Family XP.

Note: Thanks to Niantic and WB Games for providing this information early so Wizards Unite Hub can create this event guide.

Back to Hogwarts Event Tasks

The idea of this event is to follow a new Hogwarts student on their journey. Like Brilliant Events, Back to Hogwarts offers 4 distinct task sets. You must complete them in order. Each set of tasks has roughly a theme:

  • Get your Hogwarts letter
  • Arrival at platform 9 ¾
  • Take the Hogwarts Express
  • Entering Hogwarts for the first time

But as you will notice with tasks, tasks only somewhat correspond to each theme. Love the theme, but wish the HPWU developers had stuck to the theme better.

Get your Hogwarts letter

Using Master Notes is a slowing down task. If you want to spend some gold, you can either collect potions immediately or rent a cauldron. Otherwise, stick with potions with a short brew time. (Also, Hogwarts students should not brew potions at home).

Each time you return Hedwig, you will collect a letter from Hogwarts. Use a tonic for trace detection and walk to the best of your ability. With so many Foundables boosted, finding 12 Foundables Hedwig will take time. Use a Baruffio Brain Elixir at the same time to quickly gain 7,000 Wizard XP.

Any spell will work, but it has to be excellent or better to count. Try to find Foundables with spells that are easy for you, like Meteolojinx Recanto (Hedwig!) Or Aguamenti. (I’m pretty sure only Hermione tried simple spells at home).

Some other tips for improving spellcasting:

  • Clean your screen to help your finger move smoothly.
  • Try using a stylus if you have a hard time getting big spells with your finger.
  • If you have access to a smaller / larger device, try casting spells on it. Some players have found success by trying a different sized device.
Use the main notes 4 times 1 healing potion
Free Hedwig and collect 12 Hogwarts Letters 1 silver key
Cast 15 great (or better) spells 6 Snowdrops
Earn 7,000 Wizard XP 1 unicorn hair

1st Quest Rewards

  • 1 book with restricted section
  • 2 books of DCFM
  • 500 Wizard XP
  • 30 Gold
  • 25 Spell Energy

Arrival at platform 9 ¾

I really hope the trip to King’s Cross Station doesn’t involve fighting enemies… But it is necessary to accomplish these tasks. Fearsome enemies each have 2 stars. Find them in Ruins V at Tower III.

Stay away from the Portkeys. If you have any silver keys left, you can use them to complete the task quickly.

Use a trace detection tonic to find boosted quirks. Erklings and Pixies will drop off the Hogwarts Express tickets you need.

You might be able to find formidable enemies in Forest Chambers, but other players will do the same. Stick with Forest I to complete this task quickly.

Defeat 10 formidable enemies in the wizarding chambers 1 healing potion
Collect 4 signs from the Portkey Platform 9 ¾ 1 silver key
Collect 8 Hogwarts Express tickets from Erkling and / or Pixie Oddities 6 Snowdrops
Complete 4 Forest Chambers 1 unicorn hair

2nd Quest Rewards

  • 2 restricted section books
  • 2 books of DCFM
  • 500 Wizard XP
  • 40 Gold
  • 25 Spell Energy

Take the Hogwarts Express

Foundables guarded by Dementor Confoundables will be upgraded. Find them and the Weasley twins using a trace detection tonic. When you return these Foundables, you will receive the items you need to collect.

Expecto Patronum (who else heard Daniel Radcliffe shout that?) Is the spell needed to defeat Dementor Confoundables. Good luck getting great spells. Honestly, I don’t know if I will complete this task myself.

Choose Dark I Chambers to complete this task quickly.

Collect 7 Hogwarts Express Engines from Dementor Encounters 1 mind sharpening potion
Collect 13 Chocolate Frog boxes from the Weasley twins 1 Barrufio’s Brain Elixir
Cast 15 great (or better) Expecto Patronum spells 2 powerful exstimulo potions
Complete 2 Dark Rooms 1 spell book

Rewards for Quest 3

  • 3 restricted section books
  • 3 DADA books
  • 500 Wizard XP
  • 50 gold coins
  • 25 Spell Energy

Arrival at Hogwarts

These tasks are mostly just a grind. Everything is boosted, but to find as many Foundables as you need you will have to walk a lot (if possible) and use multiple tonics for trace detection.

Release the acceptance feather and admission book 8 times 1 Powerful Exstimulo Potion
Help the Hufflepuff students 6 times 1 spell book
Help the Ravenclaw students 6 times 1 spell book
Help the Slytherin students 6 times 1 spell book
Help the students of Gryffindor 6 times 1 spell book
Win the highest room unlocked 1 time 1 spell book

2nd Quest Rewards

  • 2 restricted section books
  • 3 DADA books
  • 500 Wizard XP
  • 60 Gold
  • 30 Spell Energy
  • 1 Distinguished Scholar Title

Back to Hogwarts Event Packs

Like most events, Back to Hogwarts offers a free store pack and 2 premium options. Are these packages a good deal?

For 800 gold, you get:

  • 5 Baruffio’s Brain Elixir
  • 10 Exstimulo Potions
  • 5 tonics for trace detection
  • 30 Spell Energy

It’s identical to the recent Brilliant Bundle, so I’m using the same logic.

A single Baruffio Brain Elixir costs 100 Gold on Diagon Alley. However, if you only need to buy the rare ingredients, it is better to spend 20 gold for 1 dragon claw and 12 gold for 2 poisonous mushrooms, use the main notes in the cauldron, then immediately collect the potion for 62 gold. So let’s put the value of the brain essences at 94 gold pieces.

Thus, 5 brain essences are worth 470 Gold.

A single tonic for detecting traces in Diagon Alley costs 60 gold. However, you can also buy 4 for 220 gold, so the individual value is 55 gold.

Thus, 5 tonics are worth 275 Gold.

Normally, I don’t recommend spending gold on exstimulo potions or ingredients, as these are relatively common. The other two potions are worth 745 gold, but only 55 coins less than the price of the pack. If 30 Spell Energy plus 10 Exstimulo Potions gets you 55 gold, then go ahead and buy it.

For 2100 gold, you get:

  • 10 potent exstimulo potions
  • 10 potent exstimulo potions
  • 5 sharpening potions
  • 10 silver keys
  • 150 Energy

It’s identical to the recent Bonus Assignment pack, so I’m using the same logic.

Normally, I don’t recommend buying strong exstimulo potions or regular exstimulo potions as the ingredients are quite common. However, the Return to Hogwarts event begins right after the Adversaries event ends, so players may need to replenish their potions.

Looking only at the ingredients, that’s 3 gold coins per snowdrop, bitter root and Re’em blood, plus 12 gold for Abraxan’s hair, or 36 gold coins by potion of powerful exstimulo.

Thus, 10 Strong Potions are worth 360 Gold.

A single powerful exstimulo potion in Diagon Alley costs 75 gold. However, if you have all the common ingredients, it’s best to buy 1 unicorn hair for 30 gold, use the main notes in the cauldron, and then grab the potion immediately for 41 gold. So let’s put the value of Powerful Exstimulo Potions to 71 gold.

Thus, 10 Mighty Potions are worth 710 Gold.

10 silver keys cost 720 Gold.

I still don’t recommend spending gold on Spirit Sharpening Potions. All of the ingredients are common AND unique to the potion. (Players go through the ingredients for the exstimulo potions quite quickly). Additionally, you can earn sharpening potions through freebies.

Before Spell Energy, this pack is worth 1790 Gold, not quite the price. However, if you are a rural player with limited resources at home, this pack can help you replenish your potions and magical energy, more your silver keys.

Final thoughts on returning to Hogwarts

Overall, I like the creative theme and am happy to see any rewards that match the difficulty of the tasks. While not all players will be able to complete all tasks, the boosted Foundables are exciting enough (two Emergency Threatened Foundables!) For all players to enjoy this event.
