Yorkshire has always been a popular filming destination.
With its stunning scenery and vast choice of locations, it’s no wonder that the producers of Harry Potter – to name just one example – have come to Yorkshire to film.
The wizarding films, however, which are loved by so many, were never made in Yorkshire. Although there are many.

Some Yorkshire-based films are quintessentially Yorkshire, such as Kes, Calendar Girls and Rita, Sue and Bob Too – but others are much more visible.
From favorite animated films such as Chicken Run to the teenage comedy Wild Child, a number of films set in Yorkshire have gone unnoticed over the years.
Here’s a list of movies you might not know were set in Yorkshire.
Chicken coop (2004)
The fictional farm from the animated comedy film “Tweedy’s Farm” is the main location of Chicken Run and is located in Yorkshire. This is where all the chickens lived until they escaped to a small island.
This 2002 film has some of Hollywood’s biggest names with Gwyneth Paltrow, Aaron Eckhart and Lena Headey all starring.
The romantic drama based on the 1990 novel of the same name was a box office bomb after just $ 14.8 million in sales.
But, oddly enough, part of it was in Yorkshire with scenes shot in Whitby and Pickering in North Yorkshire.
The Woman in Black (2012)
This scary movie has been released several times over the decades and still leaves you shivering.
Most recently, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe starred in a 2012 film.
The spooky village at the center of the film is Crythin Gifford, which is completely fictional but is meant to be a typical Yorkshire seaside village, with scenes shot in Halton Gill, just north of Settle in the Yorkshire Dales.
Wild Child (2010)
Teenage girls of a certain era are familiar with this teenage comedy starring Emma Roberts, Alex Pettyfer and Natasha Richardson.
It was released in 2008 and focuses on a wealthy Californian teenage girl called Poppy Moore who is sent to a boarding school in England, with that boarding school located in Yorkshire.
The secret garden
The isolated country house featured in the film is said to be in Yorkshire.
The film has been released several times, most recently in 2020 in a blockbuster starring Colin Firth and Julie Walters.
