Contrary to Harry Potter, the fallout was not as appreciated. Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets just hit theaters in mid-April, and while the franchise has struggled, it seems to have largely satisfied its audience. Fans have watched these films enough to form many opinions about them, both good and bad.
Although fans of the show tend to agree on a lot of things, some Redditors seem to have some very unpopular and controversial views on the show that aren’t discussed enough in the fandom.
They don’t deserve the hate they get
the fantastic beasts the movies aren’t exactly well-loved popular movies, even among die-hard Harry Potter fans. In 2016, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them achieved an audience score of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes; in 2018, the sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, achieved an audience score of 54%; and the third movie obtained 84%.
Even though a lot of people don’t exactly like the franchise, some fans think they don’t deserve all the hate they’re getting. Reddit user Nekomancer-kun said, “I actually find the movies enjoyable. Newt Scamander has actually become one of my favorite characters in the franchise.”
Grindelwald is a better villain than Voldemort
Voldemort is certainly widely regarded as one of the greatest villains in the history of film and literature, consumed by a dangerous lust for power and dominance, and ready to destroy anyone who stands in his way. Even though Voldemort is one of the most famous villains of all time, some fans think Grindelwald is a better villain than Voldemort.
Editor [deleted]wrote, “Grindelwald is definitely the most interesting and best villain. His message sounds slightly appealing and he’s good at selling it.”
Madds Mikkelsen is a better Grindelwald than Johnny Depp
One of the biggest surprises in the first film comes when the villain, Percival Graves, played by Colin Farrell, turns out to be Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp. Depp returns as Grindelwald in the 2018 sequel but for the third movie Depp was replaced by Madds Mikkelsen.
While most fans are devastated that Depp has been replaced, some believe Mikkelsen is better for the role. Reddit user Redpythongoo said: “Mads will be a MUCH better Grindelwald. I’m so tired of Johnny Depp’s character he’s been playing on repeat for 15 years. Mickelson is amazing and scary.”
Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s Relationship Is Just Queerbaiting
Harry Potter isn’t exactly the most diverse and inclusive franchise that has good representation for people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds and sexualities. Only a few weeks later The Deathly Hallows was published in 2007, JK Rowling confirmed that she always thought of Dumbledore as gay and that he and his friend-turned-enemy Grindelwald fell in love when they were young. Rowling has faced a lot of backlash over the years regarding the lack of LGBTQ+ representation in Harry Potter and her failure to directly mention and discuss Dumbledore’s sexuality in her books. With the Fantastic Beasts films, fans hoped Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s romantic relationship would be addressed, and even if it does, some fans are still upset about the lack of representation, arguing that Rowling refuses to openly portray Dumbledore as gay. .
Reddit user JadedToon was outraged that Rowling was “so blasé about them being lovers, but now he’s all shy and subtle about it in the movies. [Harry Potter] could really use a portrayal like that…for a show that was built on the idea of reunited family, acceptance and tolerance, NOT including it now is just the height of hypocrisy!”
Newt Scamander is boring
Most fans think Eddie Redmayne’s endearing portrayal of Newt Scamander is one of the strengths of the Fantastic Beasts movies, but alas, not everyone agrees with that. While most people find Newt extremely relatable, warmly awkward, and compelling, others find him boring and uninteresting.
Reddit user u/booksandbacardi asks, “Does anyone else find Newt Scamander a boring character to watch? I’m probably tough here, but his shyness and constant gaze at the ground is getting old. “
The American wizarding world is weird
One of the coolest parts of the Fantastic Beasts films is that audiences finally get to see how the American wizarding world works compared to the British wizarding world. While it’s fun to see American wizards in action, some fans didn’t like the way they were portrayed at all.
Redditor HooDooSquad felt like the filmmakers were “fucking America. Like, ‘We have strict wand control because of the Salem witch trials,’ doesn’t reflect American opinion at all.”
They are better than the Harry Potter movies
The Harry Potter movies are widely loved by most fans who grew up reading the books, and they’re also generally considered to be pretty solid films. It’s no secret that the Fantastic Beasts movies are significantly less beloved than the Harry Potter movies, but some fans think they could be better.
Reddit user u/getoutmyway98, argues that “As a movie series, it’s MILES better than the Potter movie series was twofold…I like the Fantastic Beasts series because it is much more complex…while Harry Potter was WAY too simplistic and boring, at least in movie form. They were Sparknotes interpretations of better books.Fantastic Beasts is more than that.
Newt Scamander is a better protagonist than Harry Potter
Even though the Fantastic Beasts movies aren’t exactly fan favorites, Newt Scamander is very widely loved by the Harry Potter fandom, his clumsiness and shy ways endearing himself to fans around the world. In fact, some fans think Newt is a better protagonist than Harry Potter himself.
Reddit user u/BarneySheldon said: “I find Newt to be a much more appealing protagonist than Harry. I find Harry to be overall ignorant, selfish, whiny and without the help of his friends and others, somewhat Nearly useless Newt on the other hand is capable, caring, and just among other things… I just find Newt to be a much more engaging and interesting protagonist.
Grindeldore is not a good ship
Despite JK Rowling’s questionable beliefs about the LGBTQ+ community, fans have adored Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s romantic couple ever since. The Deathly Hallows came out first. The fact that fans can see more of their relationship and history in the Fantastic Beasts movies only makes it more exciting, but some fans think Grindeldore is a terrible ship.
Redditor u/rogvortex58 said, “I really never saw the logic in romanticizing a relationship that we already know is doomed to end in tragedy, according to established canon.”
The costumes are ridiculous
One of the best things about the Fantastic Beasts movies is the costume design. In Harry Potter, all of the wizards wear boring multicolored robes, but in Fantastic Beasts, the wizards walk around wearing beautiful 1920s-appropriate costumes, robes, skirts, and robes. That being said, some fans think the costumes are absolutely ridiculous.
Reddit user Pinkycatcher finds these costumes “anachronistic”. These are 100% outfits from this general period, but not wizard outfits. How does Dumbledore go from a fitted three-piece suit in a year, then a few years later to absurdly colorful robes? It doesn’t make sense.” It’s certainly unpopular since the first film actually won an Oscar for costumes.
