Throughout Harry’s time at Hogwarts, he was introduced to many spells and magical creatures, many of which became essential to his fight against Voldemort.

But the wizarding world hides a lot of secrets, and some characters have talents or magical abilities that others can never hope to achieve. Sometimes these fascinating skills come at a cost, but the reader is always delighted with the details and additional abilities they come across.

ten Albus Dumbledore can speak several magical languages

Albus Dumbledore

The eccentric headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Witchcraft, Albus Dumbledore may look like a benevolent old man, but in reality he is incredibly powerful and cunning. Besides the arsenal of spells he can cast, he knows more obscure areas of magic like alchemy.

He can also speak Mermish, as well as Gobbledegook – the language of goblins. More remarkable still, he has been shown to be able to recognize, understand and even speak a little Parseltongue, which is very difficult for those who are not naturally gifted with this skill.

9 Sybill Trelawney inherits prophetic abilities from ancestor Cassandra

Sybille Trelawney

Harry Potter’s life may be guided by its cunning director, but his fate is sparked by a prophecy spoken by Sybill Trelawney. During an interview for the position of professor of divination, Sybill falls into a trance in front of Albus Dumbledore and prophesies the birth of “one who has the power to defeat the Dark Lord”. His words, heard by Severus Snape, turn out to be the death sentence for James and Lily Potter, as they are then killed while Lord Voldemort tries to destroy the threat preemptively.

8 Marauders learn to be animagi for the sake of Remus Lupine

Before James Potter was a father, he was a marauder at Hogwarts and a good friend of Remus Lupine. After finding out that Remus is a werewolf, James, Sirius Black, and their then friend Peter Pettigrew all learn to be Animagi. It is not an easy process, but they are determined because it would allow them to keep their friend company on a full moon night.

James is shaped like a deer, while Sirius transforms into a sinister and Peter into a rat. Other known animagi in Harry potter include Minerva McGonagall – who is shaped like a cat – and Rita Skeeter, who can transform into a beetle.

seven Nymphadora Tonks and her son Teddy are shapeshifters

Daughter of Andromeda Black and Muggle-born Ted Tonks, Nymphadora is a metamorphmagus, able to change her physical appearance at will. Tonks is known to have gotten into trouble at Hogwarts after using her professors’ forms.

An enthusiastic and sympathetic person, she often uses her skills for the pleasure of others, changing her facial features to imitate animals. At the same time, her abilities are of incredible use to the Order of the Phoenix, and she works as a secret agent for them within the ministry. After marrying Remus Lupine, she has a son, Teddy, who inherits her abilities.

6 Severus Snape is a skilled Legilimens and Occlumens

Severus Snape

One of the most complex characters in Harry potter, Severus Snape is the terrifying Potions professor and head of House Slytherin. Beyond his passion for the subtle arts of potion making, he is also a highly skilled Legilimens and Occlumens.

Legilimency is the art of invading someone’s mind and interpreting the results, something Muggles have incorrectly dubbed “mind reading.” Occlumency is the only way to protect yourself against a Legilimens. As Voldemort also uses Legilimency a lot, Snape is tasked by Albus Dumbledore to teach Harry Potter Occlumency, but his poor relationship with Harry makes the lessons a failure.

5 Credence Barebone goes obscure because of his abusive upbringing

With the release of Fantastic beasts and where to find them, more and more details are added to the Wizarding World. One of the main characters of the Fantastic beasts films, Credence Barebone is Obscurial. As a result of her abusive upbringing at the hands of No-Maj Mary Lou Barebone, her magic is suppressed and twisted, developing a parasitic force known as the Obscurus.

Credence is later consumed by his own uncontrollable power and rampages across New York City, though he miraculously survives. Harry Potter fans also believe that Ariana Dumbledore may also have been an Obscurial, and it was this uncontrollable power that led to the death of her mother Kendra.

4 Queenie Goldstein Uses Unusual Form of Legilimency

Queenie meets Jacob again

The practice of Snape and Voldemort Legilimency is a very organized and complicated art. In Fantastic beasts, Queenie Goldstein turns out to be a very special genre of Legilimens. Instead of being trained in this skill, she seems able to naturally perceive the minds of others. She even manages to sense her sister’s distress from afar when Tina Goldstein is threatened with execution.

Interestingly, she comments that people are easier to read when they are in pain, which is why Occlumency is based on the concept of controlling one’s emotions. But Queenie herself is not always emotionally stable, and her erratic feelings lead her to be overwhelmed by her powers. This turned out to be devastating and possibly influenced her to join Gellert Grindelwald’s cause.

3 Lord Voldemort’s serpent Nagini is a woman bearing the curse of Maledictus

Human nagini

A shocking development in the Fantastic beasts films involve the return of the Dark Lord’s serpent, Nagini. She is revealed to be a Maledictus, a woman under a horrific curse of blood. Due to his curse, Nagini is able to transform into a huge serpent, but will eventually become unable to turn back.

His first appearance in Fantastic beasts shows her transformation from serpent to woman at Circus Arcanus. The Crimes of Grindelwald ends with her on the heroes’ side, but by the time Lord Voldemort meets Nagini in the Harry potter films, his condition has become irreversible. She is definitely a snake already.

2 Lord Voldemort and the Gaunts are Parseltongue

Lord Voldemort loves Nagini and even turns her into his Horcrux. This is largely because of his overall affinity for snakes. As an heir to Slytherin, he can speak Parseltongue, the language of serpents. Voldemort’s parents on his mother’s side, the Gaunts, also possessed this ability, with Morfin Gaunt speaking almost exclusively in Parseltongue.

Considering the fact that Nagini was originally human, her connection to Voldemort had to be about finally finding someone who could understand her after years of not being able to communicate properly. Interestingly enough, being a Parseltongue doesn’t necessarily mean that a wizard has to be kind to creatures, as Morfin is often cruel to snakes, killing them, and nailing them to the door of the Gaunt hut.

1 Harry Potter is Lord Voldemort’s living horcrux

The protagonist of the series, Harry Potter was not born with any special magical ability. If he is the chosen one, it is because Voldemort chooses him as his equal. He survives the attempt on his life due to the sacrifice of his mother and thus becomes a living Horcrux. As the Dark Lord’s soul vessel, Harry is able to speak Parseltongue and has an unfortunate connection to the Dark Lord’s spirit.

It’s also the Horcrux that keeps Harry from dying after being hit by Lord Voldemort’s Avada Kedavra, as the spell destroys that part of Voldemort’s soul instead. After the destruction of the Horcrux, Harry believes he lost the ability to use Parseltongue, but Harry Potter and the Cursed Child reveals that he doesn’t, and that he can in fact still speak it.
